MEDICAL INSURANCE vs. VISION CARE INSURANCE
Functional vision care includes routine eye examinations for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and health screening for eye and systemic diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, hypertension, and diabetes. This type of service is usually covered by a patient’s vision care insurance. A patient may need medical eye care for an infection like “pink eye” or an eye disease like glaucoma or diabetic eye disease. This type of service is usually covered by a patient’s major medical insurance. There are also times when specific procedures or tests are indicated to determine if disease is present or absent. Standards of medical care are practiced in all situations possible to ensure that patients receive state-of-the-art care. Both types of insurances may exclude some optometric services, like contact lenses, vision therapy, or low vision rehabilitation. Some cover the exam fee, but not the cost of materials. And both types usually have co-payment and/or deductible requirements. To complicate matters further, not every optometrist accepts every available type of vision care or medical insurance plan. Since all insurance policies are different, be sure to verify what coverage you have before you schedule your next eye examination. Our staff are available to help you understand the benefits of your specific insurance plan. But if a policy does not cover a specific service or optical device, the patient (or in the case of a child, the legal guardian) is responsible for the costs associated with the optometric health services and materials provided. |
